The MRT in Taipei

..
The Taipei MRT (Metropolitan Rapid Transit) is the most expensive Underground system in the world and definitely one of the most modern and futuristic systems of its kind. Large parts of it represent above-ground lines which can be used for attractive and cheap sightseeing tours in the capital of Taiwan.
..
During rush hours, the Taipei MRT is not much different from any Underground in other part of the world. There are times, however, when there are not many people around (see photo below) and these phases are really pleasant. Then you will be able to enjoy the impressive atmosphere which reigns there.

Especially in the bigger stations, the architecture is ranges from impressive to outstanding, with pieces of art, advertisements, a neon-light ambiance and scenes of life going on at various levels (in the very sense of the word):

The photo above symbolises what is to be expected - the hectic life Taiwanese society is characterised by: While some people are waiting for their train to arrive, others rush to their platforms or leave the station to do their chores, all of them being stimulated to buy this product and use that service which is to be found on the various advertisements and posters around. And all this happens in a place which appears to be a world of its own, with the most modern trains imaginable, which function without any driver being aboard and give us an impression of what tomorrow's world might look like.

You may have a critical position vis-à-vis this new world - but you must have seen it!
